The Darker Side of Light

(Christopher Nevinson, Paris, LA NUIT, 1919)

There is a box.

Within the box

is a storm.

My ears ring

to the sound

of penance.

They sent me off

with the lunatics

and bringers

of death.

Back into

my mother’s womb,

I lit the flame

of hope.

To make sense

of the unfathomable-

constellations.

  1. By flame, we can see even less of the constellations! So often we turn away from experience to contemplate what cannot be understood. Better to get far enough away from the unfathomable. Womb is a good place for hope.
